Cover of "Cave Creek Canyon - Revealing the Heart of Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains"In 2014, the Friends of Cave Creek Canyon published Cave Creek Canyon: Revealing the Heart of Arizona’s Chiricahua Mountains. This fascinating book, impressive for its breadth of scope, depth of knowledge, beautiful photographs, artwork, and maps, represents an unusual publishing event—a collaboration of almost an entire community.

Inspired by the numerous questions that occur to visitors as well as residents, FOCCC enlisted the help of mostly local experts to write short introductions to 44 separate topics. From Bats to Butterflies, Geology to Geronimo, Early Peoples to Pioneers, every page holds intriguing revelations.

Portal, Arizona, has long been known for its dramatic beauty and biodiversity. It and the neighboring hamlets of Paradise, Whitetail Canyon, and Rodeo, New Mexico, are home to an astonishing wealth of talent, generously poured forth to produce this collection. In addition to the authors, another 50 or so neighbors found time to proofread, lend photos and artwork, make maps, contribute knowledge and ideas, and help with production. From start to finish, this was a community effort.

The FOCCC mission is to increase appreciation and understanding of the beauty, biodiversity, and legacy of Cave Creek Canyon. This book amply meets those objectives, and proceeds from its sale will fund projects to help a beloved Canyon affected by fire in 2011 and flood in 2014.
